Telehealth Goal 2 Subcommittee
The Telehealth Council Goal 2 Subcommittee was convened by the Idaho Telehealth Council to develop a telehealth expansion plan to operationalize and expand telehealth services under the Statewide Healthcare Innovation Plan (SHIP). For more information on the Idaho Telehealth Council, please visit http://telehealthcouncil.idaho.gov/. The Subcommittee consisted of over 30 Idaho stakeholders, who were committed to expanding telehealth in Idaho. Subcommittee goals included the following:
In 2017, the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare (IDHW) partnered with the University of Idaho WWAMI* Medical Education Program to bring a state-of -the-art healthcare program to Idaho's rural and frontier communities. Project ECHO (Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes) is a guided practice model with a goal of helping clinicians in remote communities acquire the knowledge to provide specialty care to patients in their own communities.
Project ECHO was created in 2003 by the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center in an attempt to help doctors in rural New Mexico treat a widespread outbreak of Hepatitis C. In less than three years it had developed into a method of delivering medical education and care management to primary care practitioners in remote, medically under-served communities.
Using a Telehealth model, Project ECHO has become and ongoing, globally-recognized program that brings rural practitioners and specialists together to share knowledge and increase treatment capacity of complex conditions. Project ECHO video conferencing sessions consist of a brief lecture and a review and discussion of patient cases submitted by session participants.
The first Project ECHO in Idaho was launched in March 2018 with a program on Opioid Addiction and Treatment. It has since conducted a program on Behavioral Health in Primary Care.
